Restaurant Review : Las Carretas, Ampang

There is this nice little Mexican restaurant that me and my friends have been going to for a very long time. It serves great Mexican food, is usually quite full of regulars but never got mainstream recognition. We bonded with the Manager recently and decided I should give them a shout and credit after going there so many times over the years.

I am talking about Las Carretas in Ampang. This is near the Jalan Ampang and Jalan Lingkaran Tengah interchange. It’s behind the Shell petrol station and same row as the famous expat grocers, Ampang Mini Mart. It faces a row of housing area (and not the main road) and is rather tucked in. But has a great neighbourhood atmosphere.

Las Carretas actually has a couple other branches – one in USJ 10, Subang Jaya and another in Damansara Heights. I haven’t been to those, but if you have, let me know how it is…

The ambiance in the restaurant is very relaxed. Wooden tables and steel chairs, some extending out to the front of the restaurant for those of you who enjoy al-fresco dining.

Mexican collectibles on the wall
Like a neighbourhood bar, the walls are decorated in all kinds of collectibles. You see neon light signs, number plates and occasional mexican sombrero hats and pinata.
Simple menu design
Great selection of Mexican delights

Their food menu includes traditional Mexican classics like Enchiladas, Chimmichanga, Fajitas, etc. They also serve steaks, grilled seafood and a handful of pasta dishes. Mind you, these pasta dishes are nothing like Italian pasta. I’m assuming they’re Mexican?

Specials menu
They have a separate menu for their specials. You would see seasonal fishes and steaks on this separate menu. I’ve tried some of their special dishes and they were great, albeit a bit pricey. There were Wagyu steak in there once.
Jalapeno Poppers

The Jalapeno Poppers appetizer is one of the favourites among my friends. They are basically jalapeno peppers filled with melted cheese inside. They’re served hot (very hot) and once you bite into them, you have melted cheese spewing out of them. Nice.

Chicken Wings

I don’t know what’s in the batter but I absolutely love their chicken wings. Served in half a dozen of wings accompanied by their super pepper hot tabasco style dip, I cannot have enough of this. Once, I even skipped on ordering a main and just ate nothing but their chicken wings. *drool*

Enchiladas / Fajitas

I can’t remember what picture I took, but their enchiladas / fajitas is as good (if not better) than those you’ll get at Chilli’s. Mexican food is always a classic all-round pleaser.

Nothing completes a meal more than a nice pitcher of margaritas. They serve a variety of margaritas here. They have signature margaritas (best served iced, not frozen) with their signature premium tequilas. We go through so many pitchers of this all the time. Perfect thirst quenchers… that gets you a bit (a lot) tipsy later. *wink*

Meals are fairly affordable – about equivalent of a Chilli’s meal. Or less. The neighbourhood-y feel of the restaurant makes this a cool place for a nice dinner date or even a dinner of a group of friends. As I said, I’ve been coming here for years and will continue to come more…

If you’ve been to Las Carretas in Ampang or any of their other branches, tell me about your experience and if you liked it as much as I did in the comments section.
