Heads Up : iPads, THE One and Floating Touch

It’s been awhile since I updated the blog. Personally, the tech scene has been rather dull in these last 2 weeks. Nevertheless, there are always news, rumours and announcements. Here’s my take, back to the “Heads Up” series where I summarise all that’s been going on in the tech and mobile buzz the last week.

To keep it consistent, here’s the Top 5 stories of the last week…

The new iPad is out

No doubt this is the biggest news of the last week. Everyone (mostly you Apple fanbois) have been circulating rumours of more and more specs and features of the next generation of iPad.

With multiple rumours of specs, name and launch date, the world finally got to see the new Apple CEO, Tim Cook take the stage to announce (and rebuke) all the speculation.

The 3rd generation iPad is simply called “iPad” – not iPad3, iPad HD, new iPad – just ”iPad”. It has an improved camera, an improved processor, improved battery and upgraded little things here and there. Most importantly, it has what Apple calls “Resolutionary” Retina Display that most are already familiar with their iPhone 4S.

As the device hits the store, reviews starts popping up online (like this one from CNet Asia). However, it’s not all rosy as there are reports of an over-heating device (up to 116 degrees Fahrenheit) and Smart Cover problems (the magnets don’t seem to be working). Still, this doesn’t stop many fanbois queueing up as usual to get their hands on the new iPad.

With stock shortage (as usual), will you be losing sleep for one that is only a minor upgrade?

Facebook Timeline for Pages

After enabling Facebook Timeline as an upgrade to your old profiles, Facebook announced that Facebook Pages will also be switching over to the Timeline interface.

When you visit your Facebook Page these days, you will see a top bar alerting you on switching to the new Timeline layout. Like the Timeline for your profile pages, you have 7 days to do any edits before Timeline is enabled, once you clicked on the switch. You can choose not to click “Switch” now, but there really isn’t any point as come 31 March 2012, it will be turned on by default for all Facebook Pages.

Here‘s a good visual guide of the new Timeline layout for those of you who needs more info. Or click on the image below for a larger view.

HTC One X availability

After the announcement and preview of the HTC One series phones, rumours of the availability starts on when it will hit our shores. HTC Malaysia has recently gave a little sneak peak for Malaysians. They announced a Facebook contest on the HTC Malaysia Facebook Page.

In this contest, you have to *LIKE* the HTC Malaysia Facebook Page, select 10 of your friends to share the news about the HTC One X and write a “recommendation” (read : slogan) about the phone. They will be selecting a winner daily with their “Win One Phone A Day” contest from 19 March to 2 April.

I’ve already made my submission – as I sincerely think this will the THE Android phone to beat at the moment. I want it so bad.

Although there’s no official indication on the availability of this phone, having the contest end on 2 April might indicate a launch date then?

Sony Xperia sola

Since Sony took over their shares from their JV with Ericsson, we were excited to see what the Sony team (and brand and quality) will do to the line of Xperia Android phones. And boy, did they deliver.

Introducing Sony Xperia sola. It’s a dual core, 3.7″ Android phone, with NFC SmartTags in the box. It ships running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but will be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich later on.

Sony Xperia sola introduced the world to their new technology called “floating touch”. It’s basically a technique for you to navigate your phone, without even touching the screen. You just sorta hover your hands over the screen. Check out the preview here.

For more information on the phone, check out Sony’s official website  here.

Kony 2012

I cannot not talk about the viral Kony video. A non-profit organisation, named Invisible Children produced and distributed a video to tell the world about child slavery in Uganda. The main focus was on a Ugandan warlord – Joseph Kony.

If you haven’t seen the 30 minutes long documentary video, here it is.

As of writing, this video on YouTube has hit over 84 million views!!!!

I’m not going to comment on my thoughts on this, but this video has gone completely viral on social media, with a lot of major celebrities sharing and advocating behind the cause. You make up your own mind, but there’s this interesting (albeit long) article you should read > ReadWriteWeb : Why Kony 2012 Went Viral

Let me know your thoughts on these Top 5 stories of the week. What excites you the most? Did I miss anything out?
