Restaurant Review : Samba Brazilian Steakhouse Churrascaria @ Avenue K

Recently I’ve been slowly trying to discover all the new great F& B outlets in Avenue K.. The revamped Level 3 of the previously quiet shopping mall is now alive with quite a few interesting eateries.

A few weeks ago, along with some friends, we decided to give this Brazilian steakhouse a try. Samba Brazilian Steakhouse Churrascaria is an all-you-can-eat buffet place with great grilled meats and an amazing spread of other dishes on the buffet line.

The only other Brazilian steakhouse I remember, was Bom Brazil Churrascaria, which used to be at Changkat Bukit Bintang years ago. It’s no longer there today, as Changkat is now a street lined with pubs and bars, leaving little room for dining places. ūüė¶

Nevertheless, we went to Samba (keeping it short)¬†on a hungry and tiring Friday evening, right after work when I’m famished.

Samba Brazilian Steakhouse - Ambiance

There’s the giant “fish tank” glassed kitchen in the middle, where you can watch the chef and kitchen staff cook the food and grill the meats. Around the glass kitchen, there are 4 corners of buffet spread from appetizers to main courses to desserts.

There’s an outdoor balcony seating, handy for the smokers and those who enjoy semi “al fresco” dining overlooking the entrance of KLCC Twin Towers.

Overall, the restaurant decor looks very nice and comfy. Not “cozy” as in small and quaint, but rather low lighting with colourful theme and Brazilian wraps around the giant pillar on the outdoor seating.

Samba Brazilian Steakhouse - Table Setting

If you’ve not had Brazilian steakhouse cuisine before, here’s what you’ll see. On every seat, there’s a “button” (errr… plaque?) coloured red on one side, and green on the other.

Throughout your dinner, waiters will be walking around with skewers or trays and trolleys of a variety of grilled meats. If your “button” is turned with the green side facing up, it means “Yes, please”, aka I want more meat and serve me NAO! When it’s turned with the red side facing up, “No, thanks”, aka I ate too much and I want to stop stuffing my face.

This makes it handy that you really don’t need to nod, or talk, or wave your hand, or talk when the meat starts making their rounds. But being Malaysia, this didn’t work as well as it should. Many a times, my table guests have to flail their arms to catch the attention of the waiter with the meats so they’d come serve us at our table.

Oh well.

We were seated next to an old school British phone booth,  placed next to the wine cellar.

Only when I spotted people walking into the phone booth and disappearing, only when I investigated and discovered a secret door at the wall inside the booth.

The door is locked and accessible by a smart tag and numerical code, likely only for staff and special guests. But it actually connects to the Whisky Bar and Cigar Lounge next door.

Cool secret door, but actually not necessary as you can walk next door at the front of the shop, or at the back from the balcony. -_-

Menu & Pricing

As mentioned, it’s all-you-can-eat buffet here. Lunch, Brunch or Dinner buffets range from RM 29++ (Lunch) to RM 99++ (Dinner). When me and my group made the plans, we had no idea how much per pax it cost before we sat down and started stuffing our face. Haha.

Samba Brazilian Steakhouse - Buffet

The salad spread was surprisingly good for a (mostly) meat focused restaurant. It is called a “steakhouse”. From potato salads to pasta salads to cold appetizers like oysters and crabs legs, it was quite impressive.

The crabs legs were piling up, I had to grab some. It wasn’t great though but I guess that’s not exactly the highlight of the meal.

There’s also a good amount of carbs on the spread, as well as a good golden carving station for roast chicken, lamb and other meats. There’s a good vegetables and sides spread as well.

For the cheese lovers, at the dessert spread, with some cut local fruits, there’s a huge Gouda on display, and other cheeses, where you just carve and help yourself with the cheese.

Highlight of the meal, is when the wait staff walk around with different assortments of grilled meats. From chicken to beef to lamb to liver to any other meat goodies.

Once you’re about settled from your appetizers off the buffet spread, the staff starts their rounds with the meats. They walk around with skewers or trays of meats. From chicken to lamb to beef to ribs, they stop by each table (and in our case we flagged them down to our massive 10 pax dinner table) and they’ll carve the meat right off the skewer on to your plate.

The meats are all freshly out from the glass kitchen grill and you watch them come out of the grill to the dining floors where it’s carved straight to your plate.

Including this amazingly huge and giant slab of ribs that was pushed over on a trolley with the wait staff carving it right in front of you.

I’m ¬†not a dainty woman, and these (beef) rib bones are as big, if not bigger than my arms. HUGE!!!!!

Meats are succulent and perfectly cooked. A lot of the meats, like the steak and the chicken are absolutely delicious. The meats are flavourful and you can taste and appreciate the marinade burst in your mouth.

Some meats are a little bit tough, but most of them are perfectly cooked and is so delicious that you almost don’t know when to stop.

I didn’t get to capture close ups of all meats we ate, unfortunately. We were too busy stuffing our face. Needless to say, everyone ate so much that it took us awhile to digest.

The buffet dinner at RM 99++ per pax was worth it if you’re a lover of meats and buffets. The meat was lovely and delicious. I’m not usually a fan of buffets, I never eat enough to make it worth the money spent. But in this case, it was well worth the RM 99++.

We ordered some wines as well, and it wasn’t crazy expensive at the end of the night.

The wait staff were mostly Phillipino and err..  mostly South Asian kitchen staff. Not exactly native Brazilian. But not that important for authenticity or anything, but I hear the owner and chef is a native Brazilian himself. Nevertheless, the staff are all friendly and helpful.

Except for the time when it came to dividing the bill among over 10 of us – some with cash and some with credit card payments. It confused them tremendously and took an hour to sort out. tsk.tsk.tsk.

It would’ve been annoying that they’re inept at spliting the check for a big group, but it didn’t bother us much as we adjourned next door to the Whisky Bar to have some after meal drinks for the rest of the night, while we waited for the staff to sort out the bill issue.

In conclusion, I really like this place. Convenient location (opposite KLCC at Avenue K) and good price too for a RM 99++ dinner buffet with a good spread.

I would definitely come back again when I have a hankering for meats!

If you love your grilled and barbecued meats, with flavourful Brazilian style cooking, you must come check this out.

Note : I ¬†don’t know if the spread is as elaborate for the Lunch buffet though. But I would assume not, because there’s no way you have enough time to stuff so much good food within an hour’s lunch time. And wouldn’t you be extremely sleepy and suffering with meat sweats?
