Huawei Mate 8 a refined 6-inch phablet with insane battery life

Having used the Huawei Mate 8 for awhile now, I am not in any rush to swap to my other phones.

There are so many things to love about the Mate 8, and if you haven’t caught on to it in my earlier reviews on the phone here and here, then let me dedicate this one whole review post on the ultimate killer feature of the phone – the battery!

The Mate 8 is powered by a 4,000 mAh non-removable battery, in its gorgeous unibody design. Huawei has done an amazing job with their processor as well as optimisation to ensure the battery performs better than ever.

Longer Lasting Battery Life

As highlighted during the launch back in January 2016 in CES, as well as on the Huawei Mate 8 website here, this battery can last users from anywhere between 1.5 to 2.5 days.

Powering up your phone for an incredible 1.65 days (high usage) to 2.36 days (low usage), the Mate 8’s SmartPower technology intelligently manages your power usage to give you an exceptional standby time of 22 days.

In my personal usage, I have to confirm this is true. And impressively true, might I add.

Throughout my use in over 2 months now, I have consistently been getting over 1.5 days of battery every day without fail. This includes the days where there were heavy usage of non-stop calls, emails, browsing and camera usage.

There were days that I managed over 2 days, teetering on 2.5 days. This is mighty impressive.

I could technically  push the boundaries to see how long the battery can last the next day. Because I’m pretty sure it can last me til the end of work day on Day 3 if I let it.

The reason why I charged my phone on those nights was mostly because of my “habit” over the years of owning smartphones that needs to be plugged in to charge when I go to sleep.

Jaw dropping, I tell ya.

Fast Charging

Huawei claims that the Mate 8 can go from 0% to 100% battery in 2.5 hours, with only 30 minute charging time to last you a full day.

Since my discovery of “Fast Charging” technology, I don’t know how I lived without it. I witnessed this in action with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and I almost never want to go back to old school charging in hours to get to full battery.

With my crazy work schedule, I’m constantly on the go, in back to back meetings. I barely have time to eat a proper lunch most days. To have my primary gadget for calls, messages and emails run out of juice, is the worst nightmare I can imagine in my work day.

When you’re out of battery, out and about, with limited access to a power socket, every single minute you have to recharge your phone counts. Just hoping that it’ll last you “long enough” until your next charge. Well, half an hour charge to last you for the full work day with the Mate 8. Can’t complain. In fact, live saving!

Power Saving function

Mate 8 comes with a Battery Manager app, with different functions for you to manage your “Power Plan”. Much like your laptop, where you can customise how you want your laptop to optimise shutdown, display turning off, etc when you’re on plugged in, on battery use etc. You can do the same with the Mate 8.

The app allows you to manage whether to auto shutdown apps not in use, or alert you when an app is especially power hungry and if you want to shut it down manually. Every now and then, I come here and click on that “Optimise” button just to make sure I get longer battery life.

Even if you do nothing to adjust the presets, the Mate 8 is intelligent enough to optimize your battery power for you. And in many days, that’s just what I do. The Mate 8 prompts me sometimes, so-and-so app is rather power intensive, do I want to close it, or keep letting it run in the background? Such a smart phone you are, Mate 8. Thanks for the reminder.

The Battery Manager app also allows you to have an overview of all the different apps that you run, and how much power it consumes. Might be handy if you want to know for sure if a particular app or game you download is killing your battery life.

Now, sounding like a broken record. the Mate 8 truly delivers in terms of battery life. And in my opinion, is truly the biggest killer feature of the phone.

I was impressed with other phones like Sony Experia series with their 2 day battery and thought no one could beat this. But then I reviewed this Huawei Mate 8 and it gave me more than 2.5 days of battery life!

I was impressed with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge on their Fast Charging technology, and thought no one else would be quick enough to match this tech. Then, I plugged in my Mate 8 for only 30 mins and it lasted me a full work day.

So many things to rave about the Huawei Mate 8 – but the biggest selling point – the insane battery!
